Which Kilimanjaro route has the highest success rate?

On the published claims, 8-day Lemosho and the 9-day Northern Circuit sit at the top, with figures in the 90s. But this page exists to tell you something more useful than that: where those numbers come from, which ones deserve your trust, and why the honest answer is that the number of days drives your odds far more than the route name does.

Every success-rate figure on the internet, including every figure on this page, falls into one of three buckets: official data that is two decades old, operator self-reports that nobody audits, or estimates with no stated basis at all. We will label each number accordingly. No other site does this, which is why the same route can be "27%" and "84%" depending on who is selling what.

The only official data, and it is old

The park authority, KINAPA, published summit statistics once, around 2006, and never again. These are the numbers every "official success rate" claim ultimately traces back to:

Three caveats, honestly stated. First, we could not locate the primary document; these figures circulate through operator sites that all cite each other, and we present them as "widely attributed to KINAPA" rather than verified. Second, they are roughly twenty years old: guiding standards, itinerary design and the mix of routes have all improved since, so today's true rates are certainly higher. Third, even in 2006 they averaged the best operators with the worst.

What the table still proves is the shape of the problem: each added day bought enormous improvements. That shape has never been contradicted by any source since.

The operator data: one real dataset, many round numbers

Most operators publish success rates with no stated basis. One, Altezza Travel, publishes actual counts from its own expeditions, which makes it the only modern dataset with visible arithmetic, and it deserves both credit and scrutiny. Their reported figures, per itinerary, for their own clients:

The estimates everyone else publishes

For completeness, the widely quoted industry-wide estimates (Ultimate Kilimanjaro's, the most cited set, basis unstated):

These are guesses by people with good visibility of the industry, presented without data. They sit, plausibly, between the stale official figures and the polished operator claims.

So which route actually wins?

Line the three buckets up and a consistent picture emerges despite the noise:

  1. Days dominate. Every source, in every era, shows the jump from 5 or 6 days to 7, 8 or 9 as the single biggest controllable factor. The spread between routes at the same day count is small; the spread between day counts on the same route is huge. That is the real answer to this page's question, and we go deeper in how many days do you need.
  2. At equal days, the routes with climb-high-sleep-low profiles edge ahead: Lemosho on 8, Machame on 7, the Northern Circuit on 9. The profile, not the scenery, is what you are choosing.
  3. The routes with bad reputations earn them through their short versions. 5-day Marangu is the worst itinerary on the mountain on every reading of the data. 6-day Marangu and 6-day Machame are middling. The trails are fine; the schedules are not.
  4. Your operator moves the number as much as the route. Guide quality, pacing discipline and food land your climb somewhere inside those wide published ranges.

Why there is no better data, and what would fix it

Nobody independent counts summits. The park records entries, not outcomes; operators keep logs nobody audits; and every published number is either old, self-reported or guessed. Kilimanjaro's most quoted statistic is, structurally, marketing.

When Kilihub's operator directory launches, verified climber reviews will record summit outcomes per operator and itinerary, independently of the people selling the climbs. Until we or someone else builds that dataset, treat every percentage, including the ones above, as a claim with an owner and a motive. We label ours; ask everyone else to label theirs.

Questions people ask

What is the overall success rate on Kilimanjaro? The only official figure, from around 2006, was 45%. Modern estimates cluster around 65 to 80%, and the one operator publishing real counts reported 89% of its own clients reaching Uhuru in 2025. The true current average across all operators is unknown, and anyone quoting it to one decimal place is decorating.

Which route has the highest success rate? By published claims, 8-day Lemosho and the 9-day Northern Circuit. The honest version: any route on its longest standard itinerary with a good operator outperforms any route on its shortest, and the gap between long itineraries is inside the noise of the data.

Is the 5-day Marangu success rate really only 27%? That figure is the old park-authority number and it is two decades stale; a good operator's 5-day clients do far better today. But every source agrees the 5-day itinerary is the worst bet on the mountain, and the sixth day buys roughly 20 percentage points on any reading. See the Marangu guide for the arithmetic.

Do success rates count Stella Point and Gilman's Point, or only Uhuru Peak? Usually nobody says, and it matters: the one operator that separates them shows a 4 to 9 point gap between "reached the crater rim" and "reached Uhuru". When an operator quotes you a rate, ask which summit it counts. The quality of the answer is informative.

Why does the number of days matter so much? Altitude sickness, not fitness, is why climbers turn back. Acclimatisation is a physiological process that runs on time, and no training, gear or willpower substitutes for it. More nights at altitude, ideally with high walks and low sleeps, is the only lever that reliably moves your odds.
