What is the real Kilimanjaro summit success rate?

Somewhere between 45 and 98 percent, depending on who is counting, what they count as the summit, and what they are selling. That unhelpful spread is the honest starting point, because here is the fact every glossy statistic page omits: no official, current, independently audited success statistics exist for Kilimanjaro. The park authority does not publish them. Every number you have read is old data, an operator's self-reported claim, or an estimate.

This page collects the numbers anyway, labels each by what it actually is, and shows the one pattern solid enough to plan a climb around. This is the mountain-wide data page; the route-by-route version with every source is its own page.

The baseline everyone quotes: the old park figures

The most-cited dataset traces to Kilimanjaro National Park figures from the early 2000s, published by days on the mountain:

Twenty years on, these remain the only figures with an official origin, which is why everyone, us included, still cites them. Treat the absolute values as dated: itineraries have lengthened and operator standards risen since, and the industry consensus is that today's overall rate is meaningfully higher. Treat the gradient as the durable finding, because nothing since has contradicted it: each added day buys a large, visible jump in summit probability.

What the modern estimates say

Industry-wide estimates from large operators put today's overall rate around 65 to 70 percent, with Ultimate Kilimanjaro's published estimate of roughly 65 percent the most-quoted. These are informed guesses, clearly labelled as such, covering everyone from 5-day budget climbs to 9-day private expeditions.

Operator self-reported rates cluster implausibly high: 85 to 98 percent, with the largest self-published dataset being Altezza Travel's client figures from thousands of expeditions (roughly 93 percent to Uhuru on their 7-day itineraries and higher on 8+). Self-reported does not mean false; a good operator running only 7 to 9 day climbs with strong crews genuinely should beat the mountain-wide average by a wide margin, and the selection effect is the point. What no operator number is: audited. We treat every operator success claim as a claim, per our methodology, and the honest ones say the same on their own sites.

What "success" means also moves the numbers: reaching Uhuru Peak is the strict definition; some counts include Stella Point or Gilman's Point on the crater rim, which flatters a rate by several points. A claim without a definition is not yet a number.

The one pattern that survives every dataset

Sort any of the tables above however you like, and the same variable dominates: days on the mountain. Old park data, modern estimates, operator claims, and the altitude physiology all rank itinerary length above route choice, season, age, fitness and gear. Route matters mostly as a vehicle for days and ascent profile, which is why the route-level table lives on its own page and why our route guides push 7 and 8 day versions throughout.

The practical translation has not changed in twenty years: book 7 days minimum, 8 if you can, 9 for the best odds on the mountain (the full days argument). A budget saved by cutting a day is spent, with interest, at 5,300 metres.

Why nobody publishes real numbers, and what would fix it

Gate registers record who enters; summit books at Uhuru record who signs; nothing systematically connects them in public. Operators know their own numbers and publish them only when flattering, unaudited. The park authority holds the data that would settle every argument on this page and has not published since the figures above. Until that changes, the honest position is the one this page takes: dated official data for the shape of the problem, labelled estimates for today's level, and zero unaudited claims repeated as fact. Questions people ask

What percentage of people who attempt Kilimanjaro make it to the top? The only official figures (early 2000s) said about 45 percent overall; current industry estimates put it near 65 to 70 percent. On 8-day itineraries with good operators, most climbers summit; on 5-day itineraries, most historically did not. The spread by days is the real answer.

What is the success rate by route? Routes differ mainly through the days and ascent profiles they carry: the Northern Circuit and 8-day Lemosho top the published claims, 5-day Marangu sits at the bottom. Every published route figure, with its source and basis, is collected in route success rates.

Are operator success rates real? They are self-reported and unaudited, which does not make them false: good operators selling only long itineraries genuinely outperform the average. Ask any operator quoting a rate for the cohort, the definition of success, and the years covered. Specific answers are a good sign; a bare "98%" is marketing (the red flags).

Does reaching Stella Point count as summiting Kilimanjaro? Stella Point (5,756 m) and Gilman's Point (5,681 m) are on the crater rim and earn official certificates; Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) is the true summit, one gentle hour further. Strict statistics count Uhuru. On the mountain, from either rim point, most climbers with daylight and legs remaining make Uhuru (what that stretch is like).

What single change most improves my personal odds? Add a day. Nothing else you can buy, train or swallow moves summit probability as much as itinerary length, and every dataset on this page, whatever its flaws, agrees on that one thing.
